Chapter Twelve

Skharr hurried forward to help Cassandra up. She looked drained and immediately sagged against him, although she tried to move her legs in time with him as he guided her to her horse.

"Unless you lay me across it, I don't think I'll be able to ride," she whispered, her voice still rough with strain.

"I could carry you on my shoulders," Skharr ventured, and she laughed weakly. It had been a genuine offer, but if she preferred to take it as a joke, maybe it was that too.

"That would be an interesting ride and not quite how I imagined my first time riding you," she said and patted the arm that held her upright.

"That was holy magic you cast," he said quietly while the rest of the group began to gather themselves to continue their journey.

"Yes, all paladins carry old relics that are used to remove the effect of necromancy," she replied. "It is our duty to remove the stain of that whenever we find it."

"You're no longer a paladin."

"As I keep reminding you, that’s probably only temporary. Besides, that was one of the few parts of my oaths I never wanted to set aside. Necromancy is dangerous magic, the kind that always rips free of the control of the necromancer. It is best to do away with it whenever I find it."

He wondered if he should mention the effect her spell had on his sword, but it felt like a topic for another day.

"It is the first time I cast that spell on my own," she admitted as he clicked his tongue to call Horse and her mount to follow them as they moved toward the other side of the city. "I’ve always had three or four other paladins with me. We were sent in groups, and I feel like it might have killed me if I had tried to cover a larger area with the spell."

"You engulfed the whole city, then?"

She nodded. "Aye. And as many tunnels as I could reach. There were quite a few, so I might have missed some of the monsters. Still, their power was fading. A fresh skeletal rising has bright eyes and these were almost faded. I am curious how the necromancer turned so many in the city."

"It might be that the necromancer had nothing to do with the poisonings," Skharr pointed out and felt in his pouches with his free hand until he found the vial he was looking for. "He might have heard of thousands dead from a poisoning in a city that had since been abandoned and thought it a perfect opportunity to test his abilities, and…well, as you say, it all got out of his control."

She nodded. "It’s an interesting theory. The answer may never be found among the living and the dead… As you know, they aren't the talkative kind. What do you have there?"

"A potion the mage sold to me while you were fitting your chain mail undergarments. He said it helped to give a person energy like the coffee Abirat carries, but without the side effects.
